Free during testing
Test it before it ships
Trail Truth is an off-road trail map: Forest Service roads with the dates each one is open to your vehicle, BLM routes, parcel lines and public land, offline maps, your own rides recorded and kept on your phone, and a route builder that snaps to the trails. It is built on Northern California first and I want riders here to find what is wrong with it before anyone else does.
No account, no card, no tracking. The test build expires and gets replaced as I fix things; TestFlight updates itself, Android asks you to download the new one.
iPhone
- Install TestFlight from the App Store if you do not have it.
- Open the TestFlight link above on the phone and tap Install.
- When the app asks for location, pick "While Using" and allow precise location. It needs that to put you on the map and to record rides.
Android
- Download the APK on the phone (about 160 MB).
- Open it. Android will ask you to allow installs from your browser; allow it for this one file.
- Allow location when asked. The Android build has had less testing than the iPhone one; tell me what breaks.
What to try first
- Tap a Forest Service road near where you ride. Check the open dates against what you know and the posted signs. If the map and the sign disagree, I want to hear about it.
- Build a route. Map, then Plan, then Route. Tap the map along the trails and watch the line snap to them. Save it, then open it under Adventures and send it to a riding partner.
- Download an area under Offline, put the phone in airplane mode, and see what still works.
- Record a real ride. Lock the phone, put it in your pocket, ride. The track should be whole when you get back.
- Tap a parcel and see whose land it is and how old the county data is.
How to tell me what is wrong
- iPhone: take a screenshot inside the app, then choose "Send Beta Feedback" from the screenshot's share options. It comes to me with the build number and the screen.
- Android, or anything longer: reply wherever you found this link, or message me there. A screenshot and one line about what you expected is plenty.
Everyone who tests before the store release gets a founding rider badge in the app.
Honest limits right now
- Northern California has the most data: trail status, parcels, lidar terrain, fire history. Forest Service and BLM roads cover every state; parcel lines cover 34 states.
- The printed Motor Vehicle Use Map is the legal document. The app shows what the Forest Service publishes, with the date; check it and the signs before you go.
- No Android store listing yet; the APK is the way in for now.
